Shifters (Shapeshifters) Empty

Shapeshifters, or just called shifters for short, are a race of creatures who can physically alter their form, allowing them to transform into another form or being. This works either as an inherent ability that they had since birth, or is achieved by means of magic.

A shifter has no form they call their own. Instead, they clothe themselves in whatever shape is most expedient at the time. While others base their identities largely on their external forms, the shifter actually comes closer to their true self through all of their transformations. Of necessity, their sense of self is based not on their outward form, but on their soul, which is truly the only constant about them. It is the inner strength of that soul that enables them to take on any shape and remain themselves within.

What a Shifter Looks Like
As mentioned above, most shifters have no true form of their own, however they all seem to look innately human. Their default form is almost always that of a human shape, taking on a face and features of a human as well as the voice and mannerisms of a human. They are born with this human shape, and as such they have often been mistaken for being entirely human. Shifters learn the ability to change or shift their true forms, but when exactly they learn is not entirely consistent. Some can learn to change their shape from infancy, while others do not learn until much later in their lives.

While it isn't clear when or even how a shifter learns to change their shape, it is a known fact that shifters can change into the form of any living or fictional creature they choose. This is sometimes done by shedding their own skin, teeth and nails, which is very painful. However, most shifters can change their shape seamlessly without causing themselves any pain. While most can change their shape seamlessly, their transformation time can vary from only a few seconds to a few hours.

It should be noted that some shifters have even learned to change their shape so perfectly that they can include features of other creatures on their own body, such as vampire fangs or werewolf claws. They can also alter their eyes so they resemble the retinal flare of a dog or cat, which causes their eyes to reflect light in certain settings, and can even enhance their vision to the point that they can see in the dark without much effort.

The Nature of a Shifter
Due to starting off in a human shape, shifters can and often do have human urges and vices, such as greed, lust, etc. However, most shifters aren't nearly as social or friendly when approached. They are notorious for being spiteful and cruel to all who are non-shifters.

Types of Shifters
While any Shifter can have more than one type of shifting ability, those listed here are the different types of Shifters and what they can when they shift and what they may or may not be able to obtain or be able to shift into.

Shifter- The user can shape-shift their form, transforming and reshaping down to the genetic and cellular structure. They can impersonate others or enhance one's body for combat, either by turning into animals, monsters or make the body stronger. Users with particularly flexible abilities can manipulate their form at will, combining abilities, traits, etc, even being able to form limbs into weapons and reforming after being blown apart by explosives.

Here is an Active List of the Types of Shifters and the limitations of that Pro's/Con's of that Ability to shift.

  • Biomorphing- User can turn into any living things.

    • Can only turn into living things
    • Cannot turn into anything inorganic (i.e: Cyborgs or Buckets).

  • Animal Morphing- The user can transform into animals, as well as use the abilities, traits and appearance/physiology of animals by rearranging their own DNA structure. Users may be able to transform into alien animals and/or animals they have never encountered, such as Dinosaurs. Some may have this ability from an empty genetic code, allowing them to accept any form from which they have a DNA sample, others may be able to alter their form mentally and change just by seeing and mimicking animal features.

    • May have a limited selection of predetermined animal forms to take.
    • May require a visual memory or genetic sample of target animal through touch or assimilation.
    • Incapable to transform into inanimate objects, or anything else other than animals.
    • May take on memories or characteristics of morphed or assimilated animals.
    • May not maintain human mentality.
    • May not be able to speak in a human language.
    • May not be able to combine several animal forms.

  • Beast Morphing- The user can transform into beasts, as well as use the abilities, traits and appearance/physiology of beasts by rearranging their own DNA structure. Users may be able to transform into beasts and/or monsters they have never encountered. Some may have this ability from an empty genetic code, allowing them to accept any form from which they have a DNA sample, others may be able to alter their form mentally and change just by seeing and mimicking beastly features.

    • May be unable to control their beast forms.
    • May only be able to morph a specific body part.

  • Human Morphing- The user can morph into any individual human they want, regardless of gender, age, appearance, etc. They can choose to duplicate an appearance or create an entirely new one.

    • Unless with Disguise Mastery, this power isn't useful for disguise.
    • May not be able to mimic/use supernatural powers.
    • Can still be detectable by Enhanced Sense, Shape-shifting Negation, Shape-shifting Awareness, and Enhanced Smell.
    • User may forget themselves and develop Divided Mind.
    • May only apply to non-humanoid beings, such as animals.

  • Doppelganger Morphing- The user can alter their form to take on the appearance of others, typically when they've seen said other at least once.

    • May be limited user's own body mass and size.
    • May not extend to any actual superpowers, skills, or memories the copied person has.
    • Can only take the physical appearance of another, not create completely new form.

  • Alpha- The alpha is the leader and creator of the shifters. It has the ability to control and command all other shifters through a mental link that is similar to telepathy.

Its age is unknown, but as there are stories of its children that are thousands of years old. Many believe that it is likely that the alpha has been alive for at least ten thousand years.

  • Epic/Master- The epic or master shifter is a true master of shape-shifting and is able to become virtually any creature imaginable by training and mastering their skills over time.

  • Shifter- This is the basic class/rank for all Shifters. There are no true classes. Only Epics or Masters are divided from the rest.
