He sat silently off to the side, listening to the gabbing females of his pack who were all taking so much interest in the newcomer. Comments about how pretty she was, comments about her fur and her eyes. Typical chatter that didn't really interest him in the least. It was normal for him, sitting off to the side as he watched the others of the pack go about their lives. He knew that some would tell him that he spent most of his time watching his life go by, but this was his life. He didn't have anything else to do among his pack. He was just an enforcer. No one among his pack except for the alpha male and female (and the pups) cared about him in the least. The rest looked at him as if he were doomed to some horrible fate or were some sort of outcast. He was used to this treatment, and as such he never complained or spoke out of turn.

As he sat there though, he looked on as he watched Vech socialize with the other members of his pack. She was so easily accepted by everyone. It made him want to go somewhere away from them all. When he had taken all he could stand, he stood up and moved over to the hunters of the group. They were going to be hunting soon and he had a job of leading the hunt. Because of this job, he called out for the other hunters scattered about, "Hunters, gather for the daily hunt so that we can gather enough food to feed the pack again!" He heard the whispers and grumbles from those of the pack who weren't so silent about their opinions of him, but said nothing.

Vech listened as all the females chattered around her, handing out compliments and questions alike. Did she have a mate, how old was she, your fur looks so soft and other statements and questions coming like a flood in spring. What seemed to shock them the most was that she did not have a mate yet and was already pack leader, she told them things like that couldn't be rushed but she was quickly becoming uncomfortable with all the looks she was getting. Glad for the fur covering her in this form she politely excused herself to see what Sterk was up to when she heard him call to the hunters. She gathered up with them and heard some of the things they said about him, she knew about it but to hear it with her own ears sent a fire through her gut, a quick look to her face and a few of the hunters backed away, fearful of the seemingly angry dire alpha. They obviously had no clue what had set her off but gave her space none the less. "Sterk, would you be so kind to introduce me to the hunters of your pack? I would like to meet them before they leave out since I've met most of the others in the pack, I hope you don't mind?" She used a light tone but it still bothered her, they were not her pack and she had no control over them, but it was safe to say the attitude irritated her, but she wouldn't say anything rude unless a comment was directly made to her.

He looked at her as he was asked to introduce her to the hunters of the pack. It wasn't that he didn't want to, it was honestly that he didn't live on "equal" terms with the other wolves of the pack. He was never given proper introductions despite being of the same pack. He hardly knew the names of the other wolves in his pack. If he knew a name well, it was because he had tangled with them once before. "Everyone, this is Vechnaya Noch. She's the new alpha of the brown clan. treat her kindly and introduce yourselves," he instructed lowly as he quickly moved to put distance between himself and the group of hunters. He would give them time to give introductions and ready themselves for their hunt.

Sterk himself moved over to a dead, fallen tree and sat down on it. He wasn't the type of guy to stick close to people who obviously didn't want him. Had it not been for his adoptive parents insisting on giving him the position of Beta, he wouldn't have even stuck around as long as he has. He was cursed to be stuck in place at the moment. Unable to climb the ladder, and unable to go down the ladder and leave. He sighed and closed his eyes as he felt the cold nipping at his nose. It wasn't the first time he was more or less pushed away from the fire.

As they introduced themselves a few eyed her as they moved about, preparing for the hunt and giving the peeved female her space, for as strong willed as some were, they all knew a pissed female equaled bad news for them, visitor or not. though a couple were friendlier than needed and served just to make her uncomfortable she brushed them off with a final introduction to what seemed to be one of the larger wolves going by the name of Ivan, a large steel grey wolf with a good sized chunk of his ear missing. He seemed... untrustworthy and slimy just by his words, asking if she was staying for a while. She committed the words and face to memory to be sure she would not forget the possible trouble maker soon. After the introductions finished she moved over to Sterk to get some air with the quite man, she enjoyed the social-ness of the pack though how they treated Sterk still bothered her. She knew it was mostly due to the bad rap the black wolves got and the stereotypes they grew up with as well as Sterks tendency to fight other males, but it still rubbed her the wrong way.

"So I have two questions, Could you take me with you on the hunt? It's nice with the other females and members of the pack but they seem a bit excited and it's a little overwhelming all at once. I'm not very good, but I won't be out with the main group just more of going for a walk I suppose, to cool down. And two, are the females always this interested in new comers?" She new there was the possibility of a no to her request, but it was worth a shot, she wasn't as used to all the females just swarming like that, she would like to go and do something before socializing again and having to answer obvious questions. She laughed a little and smiled up at him.

He shifted slightly, having been pulled from his thoughts by the familiar voice of Vech. He moved over, offering her a seat beside him. "I don't mind having you tag along on this hunt. I can simply ask one of the other seasoned hunters to lead the main hunt while we go out on an excursion of our own," he answered her lowly, looking over at her as he spoke to her. He was slowly coming to realize how charming she could really be. She was so kind and gentle when compared to him, she really didn't seem to fit at all. However, her gentleness could become her downfall if someone didn't look after her. He found himself to worry more about her with the passing days.

He actually chuckled at the question about the females and shook his head, "No. The females aren't usually as interested in other females as they are you. I think it's probably to see what type of female would want to be close to a wolf like me really. That, and they want to try to get in good with an alpha of another pack..."

Vech scrunched her nose up and dreaded the up coming sneeze that would soon follow, and she was right to, she had no volume control and try as she might they either came out like a kitten or a trumpet, there was no in between. It turned out to be a very soft one, thankfully. But upon hearing that they could go out on their own she smiled a bit, he didn't seem to thrilled to go with the rest of the hunters and this may cheer him up a bit. She was coming to the conclusion that even though he seemed so stony, he really was very sweet and she would get to the bottom of it, she cared for him and didn't want to see him so serious all the time. He probably had a really nice smile now that she thought about it. Now that she had a goal in mind she could try to get him to smile for her at least once today.

That sounds nice, I really appreciate it Sterk. As far as the other females are concerned, well they aren't rude but they are nosy and I really don't give a damn if they think I'm weird for hanging around you, you already know that. But back to the topic of hunting, I do well but I'm no expert in that realm, so please be patient with me. She smiled up at Sterk with the mention of not being a skilled hunter, sure she could help hunt but she wasn't a lead tracker or anything, she was mostly the muscle of the group if she went hunting, sometimes size did have its advantages, other times not so much.

He looked out at the woods that surrounded their pack's stronghold. A cold, harsh wilderness that felt so much more like home than his own pack did. It was a place he was familiar with, a place he could be himself and not feel burdened or judged. That was where he was free. "Hunting or just being alone in the forest...it's my home. I feel more free there. It's unjudging, unburdening. All it cares about is survival. The trees reach out to the sun, spreading their branches so that they can live. One of these days...I'll do the same..." he said lowly, not really thinking about his words. He wasn't sure if telling her his plans to leave his pack was a good idea or not, but he also didn't really care.

After a few moments of silence, he turned to look at her once more. "Sorry for rambling a little...I just get lost in thought and sometimes I say what's on my mind before I really think about it. I'll be the best teacher I can be, so don't worry," he told her as he moved, getting up off the log and looking back at the other hunters as they reluctantly called out that they were ready.

Vech looked at him and nodded, she knew how he felt, that's why she ran so much. It was one of the greatest releases she has as an alpha, when so many things burdened her she would take off on a run to clear her mind a form of moving meditation, as she called it. Those runs made her feel absolutely at peace with herself, another plus was that she had slowly gotten faster and faster, she didn't really know how fast as she had never timed it, but it was a good speed for a wolf that was for sure. Spreading out... away from the pack he was currently under sounded like something that would take a lot of courage... and no little strength, lone wolves don't normally last long in the wild, but if he were to do this... He would probably be making a pack all his own, which could actually work to the greater good for him.

"I think I know what you mean when talking about at home in the woods... its a scenes of peace and safety... the same thing I get on a run, right? I don't care if you speak your mind, you have a very interesting one after all, especially going off on your own. That takes a lot of courage and strength..." She hoped she wasn't just making an ass of herself and was glad for the fur over her cheeks once again as it hid her blush almost completely. She got up and followed him to the hunters, still not Ivan who gave her a dark look before making his way to the back of the formation. She would definitely have to keep her eye on him. She moved closer to Sterk, she had no question in her mind that he had not seen the look, but if he did something someone would have to hold her back. Hopefully that wouldn't happen but stranger has happened before.

He nodded at her question about peace and safety. "The forest is safer than sleeping among wolves who have kept themselves unfamiliar since my childhood. I don't remember scents often, nor do I get to socialize the way a true beta is meant to. We don't exchange scents or affections...they do it among themselves and with Amos and Ilona, but exclude me out of everything that they possibly can...I'm more at ease away from them- away from wolves who plot to kill me to take my place..."

Sterk looked back at her and shook his head. "I don't see it as courage. I see it as knowing when to call it quits with something that's not working. Obviously, this life of mine right now isn't working, so I'll just have to move on and find something that will work." With that said, he moved with Vech to take up his spot at the lead.

She shook her head and continued on as he went to lead the pack on wards to the hunt and brushed shoulders with him briefly, for such a rough man he certainly was very quiet, but he should know that he was more than welcome with her pack... or that she would help him even if he wanted to start his own pack, she was sure there was something she could do for him, food or supplies, possibly even one of the nice girls of her pack. A shot of hot anger flew threw her... no not quiet anger, but jelousy? why would she be jelouse of girls that were practically her sisters? She again shook her head trying to clear her head, she had an idea of what was happening but she wasn't sure if it was true. To think she had developed a feeling for him this quickly, it was odd. It wasn't even a fact...

She caught up with him without any trouble, speaking softly to keep it between them,"I hope you'll remember mine, it's sad to have worry about the people who are supposed to care about you... But I think you would do well as a leader, but that's only my opinion." She smiled at him and looked around the forest where they were, it was beautiful and the snow was only gently falling. looking up ahead she could see a stream and even a few squirrels. She turned back to him and waited for him to speak with all of them.

He had brushed shoulders with Vech only briefly, and it had sent a jolt of what felt like electricity through him. He had paused a moment as he took his position to recollect himself and shook his head before he had lead them all into the forest for the day's hunt. He stopped them all in a clearing and motioned to one he at least knew the name of. He was an agouti wolf who was large, but not intimidatingly so. He had gentle brown eyes, but a stern look set in his features. He was older and more experienced than some of the other wolves and had a scar across his muzzle to prove it. "Alek, I want you to take the lead in today's hunt. You know the forest and I know you're very skilled in hunting. Bring back enough food for everyone," he instructed lowly, as he watched the older male move to take position. He nodded silently and moved, backing off and away from the other hunters of the pack.

He watched Alek give orders to the others on how they were to split up for the hunt and then watched them all group up and leave. It was an instant relief in tension when they left, he relaxed and sighed. "If we're going to hunt, the first thing we'll need to do is find something to hunt," he told her as he lowered his head to the ground and sniffed, searching for a scent of something he could hunt and kill.

She watched Alek take off and order the other pack members to their jobs while she remained with Sterk. He seemed to have gotten a bit lost in thought while he gave the command but pushed it aside as he took to sniffing for some prey. She imitated and attempted to pick up any scent that might make a good catch, she was not good at tracking but she could tell you what scent was what. She caught the scent of squirrel and deer in these woods... but also bear and elk, she knew the deer would be enough but they would certainly have to watch out for the big predators. No use in fighting a full grown grizzly if they didn't have to. She looked back up to Sterk and waited for him to look up at her when he was done.

"well I know I picked up some deer and elk as well as minor things like squirrels but also a bear. So what should we start this off with?" She stood and shook out her soft caramel brown coat and stretched, hearing her bones pop as she did so. She felt much better and let out a small pleased hum while she looked around and waited for him to make up his mind about dinner.

He had picked up all of those, but an underlying scent also caught his attention. A mountain hare. He rose his head and looked over at Vech. While she was able to scent things quite well, she lacked training that most hunters of any wolf pack was given since a very young age. "We're not going after any of those today. Today, we're going after something that's more filling than a squirrel, and less of a hassle to carry back to the pack than a deer or elk," he told her as he looked around to spot any signs of the direction the hare may have gone without having to track too intently. Of course, he wasn't going to get that lucky today. His ears twitched as he listened for the slightest sound that might indicate that the hare was still nearby.

When he wasn't having any luck with his other senses, he once again lowered his head and began to track the scent of the hare. If he lost the scent, he'd be highly annoyed. After a while, he found a fresher trail of the hare and he let his tail indicate his slight joy, wagging only slightly. When he knew the hare was close, he hunkered down and whispered so as to not scare their target away, "See that hare? Try and catch it."

She cocked her head to the side and watched as he continued to sniff, apparently she had missed something, she went back to the ground as he led and pick up very faint traces of hare. She blushed slightly, of course she would miss something so simple, but then again she had no formal training as a hunter. Her pack had been wanting to teacher her the role of leader but had neglected some areas of other skills. She could do well on her own, but that was only the very obvious targets. She followed him while he tracked always keeping her eye out for the bear though it didn't seem to have come this way. She saw his tail wiggle a bit when he seemed to have found something, she put her head back down and smiled at the fresher sent. She hunkered down by his side closely seeing the large hare a few yards away from their current location. She nodded and looked at him to answer his question before slinking a little closer. She narrowed her eyes and stood stalk still, there was almost no sound and you could hear a pin drop. She took off, pushing off the ground with strong legs and giving chase, the rabbit did not last long as she caught it in her teeth, it hadn't had time to suffer as she snapped the neck between her powerful jaws. She walked back to stark tail wagging excitedly with a mouth full of rabbit, she dropped it on a log beside her to talk.

"I caught it, how'd I do?" She licked the blood from her teeth as she waited for his answer.

He had watched idly as Vech gave chase to the hare. She was stiff and obviously inexperienced. She might be able to skate by for just herself, but hunting for or with others was a completely different story. Yet he couldn't help but laugh when he saw her come prancing back, tail wagging as she showed him that she had caught it. It was as if she were an overgrown pup. "You know enough to survive on your own possibly, but when it comes to being able to provide for your entire pack on your own if you had to...well...you need some work," he told her after he had stopped laughing and motioned towards the hare with his paw. "Had that been a deer or an elk, it would have got away from you the moment you gave chase."

Sterk stood up and padded over to her and looked at her before he looked out at the clearing the hare was in a few moments ago. It was obvious that no other animals were going to be coming into the clearing for a while because of the commotion that had been caused by Vech, so he moved to once again lower his head and worked to find a scent he could get to that was close by. When he had found the scent of a small fox, he rose his head and moved silently towards the scent. It wasn't too far away, so he had to be careful. When he was getting closer, he hunkered down, keeping out of sight as much as possible, slinking low to the ground as if he were a lynx or siberian tiger. He readied himself, then sprang into action. It was a short burst of speed that left no room for the fox to escape. It was over shortly and he returned with the fox in his mouth. He sat it down on the log next to her kill and licked his muzzle. "Think you can learn to do that?" he asked as he looked at her.

"Yeah, I know I can get by for myself, my pack never trained me really how to hunt with all the others in the group due to wanting me to learn to handle other matters for the pack. My fighting and diplomacy skills I guess trumped hunting, huh? But yeah, definitely need to practice and learn what to do. hopefully I'll have someone there to show me the way." She laughed and gave him a happy smile while pointing out he would probably be teaching her, nobody else really would try if she asked. She watched as he sniffed for a new scent she payed close attention to how he caught the sent, a slight tilt of the head or so far from the ground. He crouched low and slipped silently through the grass and snow, not even a crunch beneath the big paws. Without hesitation he went after the animal, teeth sinking in and ending its misery. He sat it by hers and she smiled as she watched him lick away the blood. The thought came back that he wold have a nice smile indeed. She shook her head realizing that he had said something to her and she had been watching his mouth move rather than listening to him speak to her.

"Y-y-yeah, might take me a few tries, but I can learn! She immediately went to sniffing out new pray, using the tips she picked up from watching him. Stopping her nose only so far from the ground she picked up another fox, possible the last ones mate for the season. Slinking over to the smell she kept her body fluid, it was difficult and she really had to concentrate to keep her back side out of the air and lower with the rest of her, Sometimes she really hated being so big, it made keeping out of sight harder than ever. But she made it close enough that it would only take a few well placed steps for her to make it to her intended target. With speed she would use to run all out the other fox had no chance and it felt nothing more. She brought it over and laid it over the others before turning to Sterk. "How was that for my second try?" She looked at him while cleaning her mouth off.

He had watched her fumble a little with keeping herself concealed and struggle with her size. Even the largest of wolves who were trained to hunt were normally able to link their way into range of catching their prey so this sight was quite entertaining to Sterk. Especially since he himself was not a small wolf by any means, and he was able to maintain the same posture while hunting. if he had thought the way she was fumbling with her own size was funny, then the way she pranced back after catching the other fox was hilarious. He couldn't help it, he let out a laugh and shook his head. Vech was certainly interesting.

When he was sure he wouldn't laugh again, he cleared his throat and shook his head. "It was a shaky attempt, but good for a first try. You're still trying to think too much about it though," her told her as he stood up and padded around her in a circle and came to a stop in front of her once again. "For someone who is so powerful, you try to put too much thought into everything. The point of hunting like a feline is to let your body be fluid. If you have to think about where you're putting your body and how big or small you are, then you're not concentrating on the prey, but yourself and that could lead to you losing sight of your prey pretty quickly."

"Sorry, as I said I haven't had much practice with hunting and stalking... I lost my taste for it at one point.. its been hard ever since to really get into it without going to some dark places... Your helping... I haven't even thought of her in the whole time we were practicing..." And it was true, she hadn't thought of her friend in the whole time she had been with Sterk, until now that is. Was that a good thing or a bad thing? She didn't know and a dark look crossed her face. She didn't know what to feel, finally she felt like she could move on to hunting like a proper wolf... But what about her memory, was she ready to put that ghost to rest?

She chuckled with him none the less and dropped the fox with the other pray a crease still between her icy blue eyes. "... Sterk.... can I tell you about why I haven't practiced this since childhood... I... I feel like I could trust you for an honest answer." She pleaded up to him with eyes that were full of worry and confusion, hoping for the best.

He easily felt the shift in the conversation and in the air around them even if he hadn't been looking at Vech, he could have easily noticed that she felt worried and perhaps a bit confused about something and it was weighing heavily on her heart and in her mind. Without a word, he sat down and looked at her. His red eyes meeting her own ice blues. "I don't know how much I can really help you Vech, but I will certainly give you my most honest and sincere answer." It was the only thing he could tell her. Of all the things he was, Sterk wasn't a liar. He had been taught from an early age to be honest with someone when asked a question and since then, he has never broken that moral teaching.

"I'm a lot of things," he said. "But I'm not a lying man. I was raised to tell the truth when I was asked for an opinion and so an opinion you will hear from me." He wasn't as cunning as others, and didn't have a silver tongue. He couldn't lie his way out of a paper bag, and certainly couldn't lie his way into anyone's favor. Instead, he had to win favors the hard way. Work.

Vech smiled sadly clearing her throat and sitting beside him, she hadn't told anyone outside the pack save for a select few for years. She sighed and looked him dead in the eye, "I killed my best friend." She shook her head to get the smiling pup out of her mind, and continued her story not looking up to gauge his reaction, "Her, myself, and some others around the same age were told to go out and play that day. It was right before her birthday and we were all very excited. My dad was out just walking and nothing special, so I got the bright idea to try and sneak up on him, to stalk just like the hunters in the pack, practice in a way. It was spring and the snow was melting and coming down fast in the rivers. We had to cross a river over an old log to get to the clearing with my dad on it, myself and the others crossed... But she was so scared and couldn't swim..."

Tears were falling from Vech's eyes and her voice wobbled no one had ever really blamed her for the accident but they never brought it up or helped her deal with it either. The adults mostly kept quiet to let her deal with it but the ones that were there with her never did because they didn't think she needed the reminder. Vech sniffed and continued on, the memories being painful and still almost fresh in her mind, "She didn't want to cross, but me and the others taunted her until she came onto the log, it must have been older than we thought because it broke and she went into the water... We went to get my dad and get help but it was to late... We never found her body..."

She sobbed for her friend, she would have been a year older than Vech with her own family if she hadn't suggested the stupid idea. If she had just gotten there faster, or went in after her. She waited for judgment, Sterk would tell her what he thought and maybe put some of her concerns to bed... or realize her worst nightmares.

He sat in silence as he listened to her story. Such a heavy burden for a wolf like her who was so kind and gentle. It was obvious that it weighed so heavily on Vech. After a few moments of silence when she had finished speaking, he sighed and closed his eyes. "You didn't kill her. You didn't push her off of that log or break the log yourself. Nor did you sink your own fangs into her throat," he began as he opened his eyes to look at Vech. Such a pretty girl. "You're not a murderer Vech. I've seen murderers, been called one myself. You're kind and gentle, warm and loving. None of those things make a killer..." he explained as he stood up from where he had been sitting and moved closer to her, lifting her chin with his paw.

"When I look at your eyes, I see the kindness and warmth that I myself don't have. You're so inviting and sweet. It's no wonder you blame yourself, but it was an unfortunate accident that could have very well happened to any of you pups that were crossing that log," he told her as he sat back down, lowering his paw to the ground once again. "You said that a body was never found anywhere along the river, right? The fact that a body was never found could mean that your friend is alive somewhere out there. Don't give up hope before you know for sure Vech...there could be a lot of surprises out there in the world just waiting for you to find them...all you have to do is look."

She sighed and sobbed, out of everything no one had ever told her to her face it wasn't her fault, they just assumed she knew and went about her day. It felt like the world had been lifted off her shoulders, she hiccuped and wiped her eyes after he had let her head down. She needed to calm down soon, she had a bad habit of mood swings though she was unsure to their cause, they happened on the clock though and it was about time for one. She moved closer and leaned on him, she needed to feel close to something alive instead of her cold memories of the past, hopefully this wasn't crossing the line for as long as they have known each other.

"Sorry I have bad mood swings sometimes around this time, I just... Not one person has ever said it wasn't my fault... They never said anything. I don't know if she would still be out there or not, she could be, but then why hasn't she came back? we've lived in the same territory for years? I want to believe you but its hard when no one wants to talk about it and your just told to forget." She whimpered and felt sickened almost, she was acting like a distraught pup. She was emotionally extinguishing herself and laid beside Sterk trying to keep close to his warmth.

He nudged her and tried to comfort her as best he could. He had never been good at comforting anyone and this was no different. "Maybe she hasn't come back because she made a pack of her own and she was worried about how you would look at her for abandoning your pack. Maybe she was hurt and afraid that she'd be turned away. Whatever the reason for her not returning, it doesn't mean she's still not your friend. I doubt she blames you for what happened, and I doubt she hasn't come back to see you or her other friends because she's dead. Something else must be keeping her away."

She had asked for an honest opinion, for someone to tell her their thoughts with unclouded judgement and that was what Sterk was doing. He couldn't bring himself to tell her that he thought her friend was dead because it was a lie. "If I were her and I had a friend as important as you, there's no way in hell I'd let that stop me from visiting you and telling you about my life after that log breaking..."

"I'm sorry to be so weepy, I get really bad mood swings this time of the year and I don't really understand why." She sighed and wiped at her face once more drying the last of her tears. She looked back at Sterk and had a bold thought to ask him, to smile, but it could wait till later. She stood and nudged back and moved to the kills they had, what would be next on the agenda? She really didn't want to think about her feelings anymore right now, but they kept crashing in.

"I'm glad to have a friend like you, one I can trust, not like some of the others who just hang around because I'm the alpha... They think I don't know, that I can be quiet when I hear them talking about me like I'm just something they can use to clime the ladder. I'm smarter than they give me credit for ya know... I think, if she is alive, she might be out on her own cause the pack only searched for a couple days... they never do look long for anyone... But what now? I don't think there is anymore prey here." She came back to sit beside him scenting the air but her nose was still slightly blocked due to crying. She looked at him and gave a worn smile, still ready to put this behind her and continue to focus on her teacher.
